Austan D. Goolsbee is the president and chief executive officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. In this role, he serves on the Federal Open Market Committee to help shape national monetary policy. He also leads the Chicago Fed in supervising banking institutions, monitoring local economic conditions, and providing financial services.
Before assuming his current position in January 2023, Austan spent decades as an economics professor at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. His public service includes chairing the Council of Economic Advisers from 2009 to 2011 while serving in the President’s cabinet. He holds a PhD from MIT alongside bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Yale University.
